CHAPTER SEVEN

After helping Basil settle in the room, leaving him to unpack and make it his place, Thomas went to his suite and closed the door. He went through his usual nighttime routine by stripping off the day’s outfit, pulling on a super soft cotton robe, and moving to the bathroom. He sat on the stool in front of the counter and wiped off the eyeliner. With his face clean, he dropped the robe and showered. A quick dry to whisk away the droplets, he slid back into the robe, tying it in place and concentrated on drying his hair. Once he applied a little conditioner and frizz stuff, he let the rest air dry. After he finished the rest of his prep, he finished in the bathroom.

As he returned to the bedroom, he scooped up the old clothes and brought them to the hamper. He stood in the walk-in closet, studying the hangers to choose tomorrow’s outfit. Since he always took forever to make up his mind, he’d learned to select the outfit the night before and handle the accessories and finishing touches in the morning.

Unlike the other gay males on the ranch, Thomas loved playing around with clothes. It didn’t matter whether he was on the ranch or at a concert in the dark sound pit. Once he made the decision to no longer hide his true nature, he let his colors fly. It was another reason for the peacock title.

Making a choice, he selected sleek khaki pants as a change from the jeans, a white Henley shirt, and an aqua blue V-neck sweater. The super-fine cotton sweater was so lightweight he could see the underlying shirt. He finished the outfit with a dark leather belt and boots. Once he hung the ensemble from the door, he brushed out the imaginary flecks of fuzz and wrinkles.

Finished, he went to the dresser he shoved inside the closest and tugged out a pair of sleep pants. He stepped into them and tied the drawstring at his waist. As he left, he clicked off the lights. By the guidance of moonlight, he tugged back the covers, removed the robe, and slid under the crisp cotton sheets.

While he let his mind wind down after the crazy day, he played around on his tablet, pulling up the latest Angry Birds game to fling some birds at laughing pigs. It was mindless entertainment as he moved through the levels until sleep tugged at him. Saving and closing the game, he checked all of the alarms and slid into sleep.

A blood-curdling scream jolted Thomas straight out of his sleep. He jumped so hard, he literally fell out of the bed, tangled in the sheets. After he rubbed his sore ass and neck, he tried to untangle himself.

Another cry called out.

Barking followed.

“Holy Hannah!” Thomas realized what was happening. “Basil…”

He scrambled to get out of the sheets, raced around the bed toward the door. He yelped when his foot hit a corner of something, but he ignored the pain.
